Nicknames for Boys.

After my article on nicknames for girls, its time to delve into the world of nicknames for boys. In my earlier post, I went over the main reasons why parents give their children names with nicknames, and I'll re-hash (In other words copy and paste ;) ) the categories I made up:

1. Having a cute pet name for the child .
2. Being able to give their child a very formal name, but having something more cute and young or childhood or casual occasions.
3. Being able to choose a long name.
4. Having a more unique nickname for a child with a common name, so they're not Charles B or Charles W but Arlo.
5. For when the child is a Junior or are named after someone who they'll have close contact with to avoid confusion.

I'll give my favorites, ideas and examples for each 'reason' for giving a nickname, below:

Reason one: Just having a nickname to call your kid by.
These are just what you're average every day parent uses, for example "Jack" for Jackson, "Matt" for Matthew or "Davey" for David.

Reason two: This is when you choose a more formal name, but want to choose a cuter more childish nickname for childhood and casual situations.

My favorites are:
Allan, "Al", "Lan"
Andrew, "Andy", "Drew"
Baxter, "Bax", "Baxie", "Ax", "Axter"
Benjamin, "Ben", "Benny", "Benji", "Enji", "Jam", "Jamie"
Bernard, "Bern", "Bernie", "Ernie", "Nard", "Nardo", "Ardo", "Ardie"
Charles/Charlton, "Charle", "Charlie", "Arlo, "Les"
Colin, "Co", "Cole", "Collie", "Olly"
Dominic, "Dom", "Nic", "Nico"
Edward/Edwin, "Eddie", "Ed", "Woody", "Win", "Winny"
Fletcher, "Fletch", "Letch", "Etch", "Etcher"
Francis, "Frank", "Frankie", "Rance"
Fredrick, "Fred", "Freddie", "Eddie", "Edrick", "Ed", "Drick", "Rick", "Ricky"
James, "Jame", "Jamie"
Jasper, "Jaz", "Perry"
Leon, "Lee", "Leo", "Lonny"
Lincoln, "Linc", "Cole", "Coln", "Collie"
Lloyd, "Loy", "Oydie"
Malcolm, "Mal", "Colm", "Cole", "Collie"
Matthew, "Matt", "Mattie", "Math", "Hugh"
Michael, "Mike, "Mikey", "Mick", "Kel"
Nicholas, "Nick", "Nicky", "Nico", "Cole"
Patrick, "Pat", "Patty", "Paddy", "Tricky", "Rick", "Ricky"
Quintin, "Quinn", "Tin", "Tin-Tin", "Tiny"
Richard, "Rich", "Richie", "Hardy", "Ardo", "Ardie"
Sebastian, "Seb", "Batty", "Bastian"
Theodore, "Theo", "Teddy", "Dore"
Travers, "Trav", "Travvy", "Rav", "Ravi",
Vincent, "Vin", "Vinnie", "Cent"
Wesley, "Wes", "Es", "Lee"
William, "Will", "Billy", "Liam"

Reason three: For parents who choose out a long name, but want something shorter as a nickname to make it easier.

My favorites:
Alexander, "Al", "Alex", "Lex", "Xander", "Ander", "Andy"
Finnegan, "Finn", "Finnie"
Garrison, "Gary", "Garris", "Sonny"
Harrison, "Harry", "Harris", "Sonny"
Leverett, "Levi", "Lev", "Rhett"
Rafferty, "Raff", "Raffi", "Tee"
Remington, "Remi", "Ming"

Reason four: For parents who choose out a popular name, or find out they've named their child a popular name, unique nicknames can be a good solution.

My favorites..

Ryan, "Yin", "R"
Samuel, "Zam", "Sammo"
Tyler, "I", "Tyles", "Tel"
William, "Lee", "Wim"
Zachary, "Cary", "Z", "Car", "Caro"

Reason five: When naming after someone who will spend a lot of time with the boy, a different nickname helps everyone be a lot more clear.
See above reasons for ideas.

Special name meanings for boys.

Many parents like to consider the meaning of a name to help them or completely decide on what name to choose for their child. Names with special meanings can even be used as a middle name to supplement a name you've already chosen as a first name.

Here are some of my favorite nice and cute meanings, with hints and tips on when they could be used.

Special meaning: Physical Feature
This is where you choose a name which has a literal meaning to describe your son. Features such as hair color or gender are good examples for this, the feature you chose is more factual than bias such as "good-looking" :).
Some ideas:
  • Abel, meaning "son" in Hebrew. A cute idea maybe for a first son.
  • Aelwyn, (arl-wein), meaning "white, fair" in Welsh.
  • Boyd, meaning "yellow hair" in Gaelic.
  • Caesar, meaning "dark hair", "long hair" and "head of hair" in Latin. For a baby boy born with a nice bit of hair!
  • Carl, Cary, Charles, meaning "man" in Old German. Cute for parents who call their sons their "Little man", especially if paired with a first name that means "little/small"
  • Cecil, meaning "blind" in Latin.
  • Cormac, meaning "son" in Irish Gaelic.
  • Crispin, meaning "curly" in Latin. For a little boy with Curls!
  • Darren, meaning "small one" in Gaelic.
  • Derry, meaning "red-headed" in Gaelic. For all the carrot-topped cuties.
  • Dexter, meaning "right-handed" in Latin.
  • Dwayne, meaning "dark little one" in Irish Gaelic.
  • Dwight, meaning "white, fair" in Old English.
  • Elvis, meaning "elf-like" in Old English. For baby boys with cute little ears.
  • Farley, meaning "fair" in Old French.
  • Finbar, meaning "fair-headed" in Gaelic.
  • Finn, meaning "fair" in Irish Gaelic.
  • Julian, meaning "fair-skinned" in Latin.
  • Kane, meaning "dark" in Celtic.
  • Keir, meaning "dark-skinned" in Irish Gaelic
  • Kieran, meaning "dark one" in Irish.
  • Kumar, meaning "son" in Sanskrit.
  • Paul, Pablo, meaning "small" in Greek.
  • Poco, meaning "little" in Italian. This one would be cute as a nickname for a baby.
  • Rory, meaning "red-haired one" in Gaelic.
  • Rufus, meaning "red-haired one" in Latin.
  • Russell, meaning "red-haired" in Old French.
  • Sven, meaning "boy" in Norse.
  • Vaughn, meaning "little" in Old Welsh, and "small" in Celtic.
Special meaning: surviving through hardship.
This is for babies who have been born premature, through complications or have disabilities but are looking positive, enduring it or hanging in there.
Some ideas:

Special meaning: naming after a loved one.
Naming your child after a family or friend but are stuck for a first or middle name? Don't like there name at all? These meanings are cute in certain situations (As another idea, names with 'characteristic' meanings can work well when naming after loved ones. Your dads name is Mark at you hate it? But he's a real nice guy and you want to use it as a middle name? Something like Allan (meaning 'cheerful' in Irish Gaelic) Mark would be cute, meaning Cheerful Mark). When naming after a good friend, a name meaning "friend" used as a middle name can be cute, or using a name with the meaning "friend" when you don't like your friends name is another option!

Whats different from Australian boy names and American boy names? And what can we learn from that.

Names which Americans (and others) can steal from the top Australian names (cause they aren't too popular in the US!).

Some interesting features of Australian boys names:
The name Aaron, is not pronounced air-run, but a-ron with a sharp 'a' sound.

Shortenings of names such as "Ben", "Sam" and "Will" are common as names on their own.

Variants of spellings are rare, and traditional spellings are nearly always used.

Names such as Bailey and Riley are seen as boys names alone, and are very rarely used for girls.

Scottish and Irish names which are rarely used in the US such as Lachlan, Angus and Callum are popular and have been for a long time.

Names Aussie parents should steal from the US top list and run! (theres a lot, grab your pen and paper!)

Terrible boy names awards, 2006

I've got a confession to make. Theres a huge part of me that loves girls names, more than boys! So it's taken me awhile to get onto task to do the boys awards after doing the girls (which took a long time to do, i'll tell you!)

So, i'd like to welcome you to:

The Mini Terrible Boys Names awards 2006

:)

First category:
Random Y's
Random Y's are when the letter "y" is randomly inserted in place of another vowel. This is very popular in the realm of of girls names. But this also happens in boys names, too.
which is a little strange because it makes the name look a lot more feminine!
Offenders are:
Aidyn
Landyn
Camryn
Gavyn
Jordyn
Austyn
Trystan
Devyn

Winner: Gavyn

Second category: Weird incomprehensible spellings:
Some people just like to completely confuse (and really freak me out) with the way they insist on spelling a name!
Offenders are:
Rayan (supposed to be Ryan)
Brayan (Brayan)
Izayah (Isaiah)
Nathanael (Nathaniel)
Ean (Ian)

Winner: Izayah

Third category: Trying to make it 'unique'.
This is similar to the second category, although the names are often still recognizable, but just strangely spelled, often to try and achieve uniqueness.
Offenders are:
Konner
Alijah
Issac
Karter
Koen

Winner: Koen

Forth category: Random syllable onto an already perfectly fine name
Guys, the names Shawn, Marcus and Angelo are a nice names. They don't need anything added onto the front. Still, many insist on doing it:
Deshawn
Dashawn
Deangelo
Demarcus
Tyshawn
Jamarcus

Winner: Demarcus

Fifth category: Bad names
Names which are just stupid.
Offenders are:
Amari/ Jamari/ Kamari (kind of pretty names, but for a boy??)
Noe (pronounced: No-ee. It sounds like what a Mom says to their little child, "Noey, Thomas, don't touch that, Noeys"
Willie. (Oh, god...)
Sincere. (What's he going to be called for short? Sin?)
Hamza. (Not only a weird name, Nickname? Ham? It means "foul smell". Hm..)
Prince (speaks for itself)
Stone
Winner: Hamza
